Why the equator is hottest

The claim

“If the axis is tilted 23°, why is the tilted-away equator the hottest place?”

What is measured

Heating goes as the cosine of the Sun’s angle, not distance. The equator gets the most concentrated sunlight all year. The 23.4° tilt drives the seasons, not the equator’s heat.

What would show this is wrong

the hottest zone tracking the tilt direction rather than the sub-solar latitude, or insolation that ignores the cosine-of-angle law.
